What Causes blocked drains?

How to clear a blocked drain?

Clearing a blocked drain will be different every time because there are a number of factors that go into each situation.  Firstly, you have to locate and identify where the blockage is in the drain or sewage pipe.

Secondly after eliminating any possibility of the blockage being in the property pipework. The next step would be to open up external manhole covers to inspect the chamber that is near the main drain or septic tank.

Once the location of the blocked drain has been found the next step is to use drainage rods fitted with plungers inserted at one end of the drain where the blockage is to try and dislodge it.

If after some probing using this method with no success the next step would be to change the plunger end on the rod for a corkscrew attachment, this is designed to break up what is causing the blocked drain.
